Industry News: Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium Updates SOC with Cloud-Based Monitoring and Response Platform

Hard Rock Stadium Put 850 Cameras on a Cloud Platform

The Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium are moving security operations from legacy on-premises systems to Verkada’s cloud-managed platform. The project covers about 850 cameras and 380 access-controlled doors at the 65,585-seat venue.

Castaway Technology and Security supported the deployment. The stadium is using Verkada Command to bring video security, door access, guest management, intercoms, alarms, and related workflows into one interface.

That is a big project for a big venue. It is not a reason for a 30-person company to replace every camera and access-control reader next month.

What the stadium changed, and what it did not

The useful part of this story is not the stadium’s size. It is the migration plan. CTS used Verkada Command Connector to bring existing camera infrastructure into the new platform while the transition was underway. That means the stadium did not have to treat every existing camera as disposable on day one.

That approach matters to smaller businesses. A camera system can still have useful hardware even when its software is difficult to manage. Replacing everything at once creates a large bill, a long installation window, and more opportunities for something to go wrong.

We prefer a measured replacement. Start with the cameras, doors, or locations causing the most trouble. Keep compatible equipment in service where it makes financial sense. Move the management layer first when the platform supports it.

Why cloud management matters to a small business

With a traditional on-premises system, someone has to maintain servers or recording appliances, apply updates, manage remote access, and troubleshoot the system from the site or through a carefully maintained connection. That work does not disappear with cloud security, but the day-to-day burden can shift.

Verkada Command provides remote administration and automatic firmware updates. A business owner or IT provider can manage permissions and review security events without sitting in front of a recorder in the office.

That is useful when a door needs to be disabled after an employee leaves, when a manager needs temporary access, or when a camera must be checked at a second location. It also reduces the number of systems a small IT team has to remember during an incident.

Cloud access is not free security. It creates a dependence on the vendor, the internet connection, licensing terms, and account protection. We would require strong administrator authentication, named accounts, limited permissions, and a written plan for what happens if the internet connection fails.

Temporary access is more valuable than it sounds

The stadium can provide temporary, audited access to public-safety agencies and other event stakeholders. A smaller organization may use the same idea for a contractor, a cleaning crew, a landlord, or a visiting executive.

Temporary access beats handing out a permanent code and hoping someone remembers to remove it. The important detail is the audit trail. We want to know who had access, what they could open, and when that access ended.

This is especially helpful for businesses with several offices, shared buildings, or frequent outside vendors. It also gives management a clearer answer when a door or camera event needs investigation.

Our recommendation for a 30-person company

We would not buy a stadium-sized platform simply because a stadium adopted it. We would first inventory the current cameras, doors, recording equipment, internet connections, and service agreements.

Then we would identify the actual pain. Is remote viewing unreliable? Are former employees still active in the access system? Does nobody know when firmware was last updated? Are investigations slowed because video and door events live in separate systems?

If those problems are real, a cloud-managed platform may earn its place in the budget. If the existing system works, has current security controls, and rarely needs changes, replacing it may be difficult to justify.

Ask the vendor or installer whether existing cameras can be integrated through a product such as Command Connector. Get the licensing cost in writing. Confirm video retention, outage behavior, export options, administrator controls, and the cost of adding another door or camera.

IT911Now can help review the current setup and build a replacement plan that starts with the weakest parts instead of forcing a full rip-and-replace. Begin with an equipment inventory and one conversation about what the current system makes difficult.
